Forklift Safety And Operations

Safety should always be the number one priority when operating heavy equipment. If you work with hazardous materials, in tight spaces, or around other people, neglecting basic principles can become dangerous for everyone involved. We often get complacent when doing the same thing day in and day out, and think we are saving time by cutting some corners. That is a bad habit to fall into. There are certain things that should be done daily for proper forklift safety.

Do Not Skip Inspections

Visual and operational inspections should be done every day before operating your forklift and material handling equipment. Things like safety harnesses, brakes, tires hoses, controls, alarms, and lights should all be in working order to keep the operator and those around them safe. Check for obstructions to prevent any accidents you may run into. You may save a few minutes of time if you skip this, but you endanger everyone around you and yourself by not making sure your equipment is maintained.

Do Not Speed

This sounds like a no brainer, but when we work in an environment we are comfortable with, it becomes easy to go a little faster than we normally would. Driving too fast, even without a load, can result in loss of control and your forklift flipping over.

Be Aware Of Your Surroundings

You should always check behind you before backing up and when making a corner. Just because you are not used to someone being there doesn’t mean they won’t be. Serious injuries can happen if there is a collision with another piece of equipment or a person on foot. Do not put anyone else at risk by failing to be aware of what and who might be around you.

Fooling Around

It is important to enjoy your work. It is equally important to work safely. Do not ride or offer rides on parts of your lift that are not meant for people such as the forks. This can endanger the safety and lives of your coworkers. Have a good day at work, but make sure that everyone goes home safely.
